Black Veils 04:30
Night fell hours ago, but the chittering of the forest never settled. Even to deftly attuned ears, it was impossible to tell how close the fearlings moved behind the travelers. Daf choked out: “I counted only three when the ambush started!” “That means nothing,” Pend spat the words, then bid his friend to lower his stance with a downward sweep of his palm. “Their numbers grow – even as we speak.”

The fifth moon shifted into place – a barely perceptible pinpoint in the predawn sky to those on the battleground. Agar stood atop the central plateau, revealing the silhouette of his form to both sides of the conflict. Transformed by the berserker’s ritual, blood dripped from his eyes to streak his face and chest. His proud posture stooped suddenly, and it wasn’t clear whether he was laughing or sobbing. “I never thought I’d live to see it,” Agar admitted under his breath. To those close enough to witness his features, the madness in his eyes and the waver in his voice confirmed that he had truly lost all composure. "I didn't think I'd be here to watch the Kingdom of Men fall."

Lachrimae 03:09
“The memory’s been painful enough to destroy the beauty of this place for me permanently. Forever. And yet the beauty remains – even without me.”

They had shed so much of themselves in their egress. There came a wailing from the stone walls around them. The churn of a thousand legs and two heaving lungs grew more intense behind them. The stones' singing continued, with words that were dissonant but woven with true ideas. It broke them, even as it urged them forward.

“You can hear them working the floorboards upstairs.” Sal gave her younger brother a reassuring smile. “But it’s no trouble for us, because we have no business on the second floor.” She paused. “Did you have a question, Teth?” “If the wights can’t see or hear us, then how do they know to start moving like that?” “I don’t know,” she answered. “The only thing I know for sure is our most important rule. You remember what I’m about to say, don’t you?” Sal reached out to clasp her hand over the stub of her brother’s missing thumb, but he drew himself away and rubbed at his forehead instead. Teth recited dutifully: “We know to keep out of their way.”

Exequiae 08:06
Fifteen score canoe graves were cast into the northern sea that night. Each was loaded with the remains of the dead. An elder saw one of the orphaned children crying and chided the boy. “They’ll be back soon,” the elder said. He raised his hand in a stern warning to the orphan who now hurried to dry his tears. “We’ll see our families again before this is over.”

Misty Shores 03:51
There came a gentle babbling from out beyond the fog. It was not the playful sound of water falling over rocks, but instead the gibbering of an almost-human voice. Something near the center of the lake was inviting the merchants to approach, but they refused. There had been too many skulls and ribs found half-buried in the sands of the shore. The travelers continued on without daring to pierce the fog over the water.

Catacombs 05:58
The Dead whispered to each other as the living soldiers passed. They wondered quietly, in their Oneness, about which of the visitors might join them. A lone cadet wandered around some corner to relieve himself in an alcove. The Dead sent roaches to observe him, and when they chose the man for taking, they sent an asp to strike his ankle. The cadet choked for air as the poison slumped him down. The living soldiers passed. If they noticed their cadet’s absence, then they only shrugged and trusted him to rejoin the group eventually. His skull became one of many, and his whispers joined the Oneness of the Dead.

Wicked Tales 10:15
It was the first step of Scalvad's journey, and he felt brave until the ground shifted beneath him. Watery murk seized his boots and playfully drew him off-balance. If it wanted to, this marsh could claim his legs and pull him apart. He didn’t falter. No one would recognize Scalvad by the end of his walk, but he was not afraid of that at all. Those who lost themselves to the swamp would live forever in the new bodies they had been promised.
